CANNON CELEBRATES KINDNESS WEEK!  Cannon Cubs will have the opportunity to celebrate KINDNESS all week long this week!  GCISD's Kindness Day is Wednesday, April 6th and all students are encouraged to wear either a Rachel's Challenge or Cannon shirt to show their support of kindness!  If you ordered a Rachel's Challenge shirt, they will be handed out on Monday.  If you would like to purchase a shirt, Mrs. Coburn still has a few left.  These shirts are $7 and can be purchased through Mrs. Coburn by emailing her at amanda.coburn@gcisd.net .  Cannon's Kindness Challenge will last ALL week long, April 4th-8th. Mrs. Coburn is challenging all Cannon students to celebrate kindness ALL week by completing 20 deliberate acts of kindness at school or at home.  A chart of kind acts will be coming home with all students on Monday, April 4th.  Students should complete each kind act and then color in the corresponding box.  Once students have completed all kind acts, turn it in to your teacher by April 8th to receive something special from Mrs. Coburn!

CANNON OSITOS CHOIR PERFORMS FOR GRACE SENIOR CITIZENS!   Not only did our 1st & 2nd grade Osistos choir students perform beautifully for parents and their peers last week, with a fun and upbeat musical rendition of Frog & Toad, they had the opportunity to put BIG smiles on the faces of some special guests on Friday! Cannon has been working in partnership this year with GRACE and the senior citizens they support, by having students design & deliver holiday cards for these seniors, to help brighten up their holidays.   On Friday, several of these senior citizens traveled to Cannon to enjoy a performance by the Ositos choir members.  Big thanks to Mr. Lollis for all of his hard work to prepare our choir students AND to the parents who helped support by designing costumes & decorations for the stage.  It was  GREAT show!  Click here to see more pictures of this Frog & Toad performance for the GRACE senior citizens.

GCISD WILL USE NEW REGISTRATION SYSTEM FOR 2016-2017 ENROLLMENT  Beginning with the 2016-2017 school year, GCISD will begin using Skyward Family Access to register students.  This is a change for families, as the district has previously used Infosnap.  New students to GCISD for the 2016-2017 school year, including incoming Kindergarten students may begin registering with Skyward the week ofApril 25-April 29.  All returning students will complete registration in August.  Be sure to share these dates with any family, friends, or neighbors who have incoming Kindergarten students or other students who will be new to GCISD next year.  To read more about this change in registration systems, click here.

CHANGES TO INSTRUCTIONAL CALENDAR 2016-2017  A letter is coming home on Monday with all students to inform you about the change to the instructional calendar that will be going before the Board on March 28 at Colleyville Middle School.  Every year, the District Excellence Committee, comprised of teachers, staff, parents and community members, as well as district and campus leadership, review possible calendar options before presenting to the Board of Trustees. This year, we had the additional complication of HB 2610, which was developed and passed during the 84th Texas legislative session. It requires districts to provide at least 75,600 minutes of instruction, rather than 180 days. Due to the new legislation passed by the State, there will be some changes made to the student-teacher calendar in GCISD. To maintain the calendar the community desires and has previously approved, elementary, middle and high schools must have 435 instructional minutes per day. In order to accommodate the new requirements, the district had to make adjustments to the school day for elementary and high school students. The new start and dismissal times are impacted not only by the change in the required instructional minutes but also by the resulting shift in the transportation schedules. Below is the proposed schedule for 2016-2017 school year:
●      Elementary School 7:40 a.m. - 2:55 p.m.
●      Middle School 8:10 a.m. - 3:25 p.m.
●      High School 8:40 a.m. - 3:55 p.m.
If the Board approves the proposed changes to our bell schedule, the district will post information on the district website and share through campus social media channels.

EASY WAY TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL!   Did you know that it has been OVER 5 YEARS since Cannon has done a school-sponsored fundraiser!  In an effort to provide an opportunity for Cannon parents to help support Cannon directly, by making donations that go directly to Cannon school funds (not through PTA), we are doing a Greenback Fundraiser!  Instead of asking families to support sales, such as cookie dough, candy or wrapping paper, we are making it easy for Cannon parents by simply asking parents to make a one-time donation directly to Cannon.  Funds raised through this effort will help support our G-R-O-W-T-H and will be used to help fund the purchase of curriculum materials for STEM, technology,  professional development opportunities for our teachers, and for the purchase of MORE wonderful resources that will directly benefit your child!  In order to make this as easy as possible for our parents, donations can either be made online, using a credit card (no fees involved!) or by cash/check.  Checks should be made out to Cannon Elementary.  All donations are tax-deductible and a form for tax deductions will be provided upon request. Donation forms will be sent home with all students soon!   Click here to make a donation ONLINE now!  Select the button - Cannon- Growing the Future!!

RACHEL'S CHALLENGE RALLY This year's GCISD Rachel's Challenge Rally is scheduled on April 16th @ Colleyville Heritage High School.  There are several fun family events to get involved in this year!   Check out this information about the Rachel's Challenge event!
