Matter Engineering Design Project Day 1

Ask: What is the Problem?

The Challenge:
Bubble World Inc. is looking for a new design for bubble wands. They would like you to design and create a bubble wand that can capture a gas inside of a liquid. The wand should function like a traditional bubble wand; a person should be able to blow bubbles using your wand.  Think about what you know about liquids, solids, and gases to build a successful wand that would be appealing to children both in size and design.

Must Haves (Criteria):
1. The wand must be made of 3 different types of solids
2. It must be able to hold the liquid (bubble solution)
3. The wand should be able to capture a gas when blown through
4.The wand must be at least 6 inches long
5. It must have at least one handle

Limitations (Constraints):
1. 1-2 days for construction
2. Use only provided materials
3. Budget of $20

We began to move into the IMAGINE stage as we were identifying possible solutions to the problem.

The students are given a template on Google Slides to follow and use as they progress through the engineering design process. After they finish their projects, they will use their slides to help them communicate and share their achievements.
